Die Verwendung von Stoppbädern auf Citronensäurebasis bietet gegenüber der Essigsäure den Vorteil geruchsfrei zu sein.
Wie bei jeder anderen Säure entstehen aber auch bei Verwendung von Citronensäure Emissionen beim Kontakt mit carbonatalkalischen, sulfithaltigen Entwicklern.
Almost all positive developers contain a high amount of sodium sulphite as oxidation protection. If odour nuisance is to be reduced, a water bath can be added upstream of the stop bath. However, it should be noted that the development process will then continue - although at a much slower rate - until the pH value in the acid bath is abruptly lowered.

Dilution to 2% solution 1+28 (36ml to 1 litre of water), a dilution of 1+40 is completely sufficient for interrupting development.
